ASUS RT-AX68U Router Performance.
Both in looks and on paper the ASUS RT-AX68U Router looks in a class of its own and we’re happy to say that is how it turned out in testing.
The Asus AC68U was so fast we actually hit bottlenecks in our NAS and wireless adaptors for the first time. Subsequently we upgraded our test equipment to a premium, as-yet-unannounced Synology NAS (which we will also be reviewing soon) with Western Digital Red label NAS-specific hard drives and an Asus PCE-AC68 AC1900 PCI Express wireless ac adaptor.
Critically, the bottlenecks occurred at 42MBps something no other router has arrived. We went back and retested the fastest routers we’ve seen to date (the Linksys EA6700, Asus RT-AC66U and D-Link DIR-868L) and their results were unaffected. On with the scores.
In our residential test environment at 2m and 10m line of sight and 13m behind two standing walls over 802.11 ac the ASUS RT-AX68U Router showed up barnstorming figures of 47.2 MBps (377.6 Mb/s), 44.3 MBps (354.4 Mb/s) and 29.7 MB/s (237.6 Mb/s). The first two speeds blow away the competition with 39.1 MB/s (312Mb.8 Mb/s) and 35.2 MB/s (281.6 Mb/s) from the AC66U and EA6700 respectively the fastest we had seen at 2m and 10m. At 13m the gap closes substantially, but the ASUS RT-AX68U Router still bests the previous 28.8 MB/s (230.4 Mb/s) benchmark of the EA6700.

Verdict.
The ASUS RT-AX68U Router is definitely a good WiFi 6 router, but it doesn’t address any of the concerns that a lot of users currently have. Should we skip the WiFi 6 and wait for the WiFi 6E, what is Asus currently focusing on and why release so many almost identical 802.11 ax routers in a short period of time? In any case, if you do need to upgrade to the WiFi 6 standard, know that the ASUS RT-AX68U Router will work fine with both AX clients and AC clients, although if you only have the latter, the wireless performance is not going to be massively different than on the RT-AC86U. I know that the Instant Guard is a big reason to check it out, but I have no doubt Asus will add it to many other routers (it already has with cheaper WiFi 6 routers) and, overall, it does feel that the RT-AX68U is just an Asus RT-AC86U that’s been upgraded to work with WiFi 6 clients. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing, it’s up to you to decide.
